Neuromuscular Dentistry
Modern dentistry does more than improve the appearance of a smile.
It also creates lasting, functional smiles that improve the overall
health of the patient.
To have a healthy, attractive smile, you must first have a healthy
bite. When the bite is out of alignment (called malocclusion), a variety
of problems can occur. The most prevalent is temporomandibular joint
syndrome, (TMJ). Advances in the science of complete dentistry have
taught us how to bring the jaw into a relaxed position to help alleviate
years of pain and discomfort. Twenty-five years of research and clinical
experience have shown this position to be effective in treating patients
with head and neck pain as well as TMJ.
What are the symptoms?

- Pain in teeth that seems to move around
- Neck, shoulder or back pain

- Clicking or grating sounds in the jaw joints
- Limited movement or locking jaw
- Numbness in your fingers and arms
- Congestion or stuffiness of the ears
How can Neuromuscular Dentistry Help me?
Dr. Kaffey is highly trained in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular
problems in a patient with malocclusion. Following a comprehensive
examination, if you are diagnosed with malocclusion, Dr. Kaffey may
recommend a personalized treatment plan that will correct your bite
and alleviate pain and discomfort.
Treatment plans include the use of a dental orthotic and/or dental
restorations to gently shift your jaw into a comfortable and pain-free
position. Placed on one tooth, several teeth or every tooth, these
restorations will precisely raise or lower areas of your bite to create
a naturally comfortable position for your jaw.
How will I look following Neuromuscular Dentistry treatment?
Depending on the degree of the initial problem, we find that many
people experience a moderate to significant change in their facial
appearance following the completion of treatment. Patients with recessed
lower jaws may have a new profile, accenting a stronger jaw line and
those patients with protruded parts of their jaws may experience a
pulled back appearance. This realignment of the jaw creates balance
and an aesthetically pleasing result. In addition, all of the restorations
necessary to correct the bite will be created with consideration of
the aesthetic result of the smile. Not only will this procedure correct
pain, it will give patients the smile they have always dreamed of.
